Darker skin tones, such as African American skin tones, can have difficulty with laser hair removal. Advantages of Laser Hair Removal

Laser hair removal has both some advantages and disadvantages which must be considered before doing this. The advantages of laser hair removal for black skin are described in brief below.
PrecisionThe use of lasers allows for the technician to target single hair follicles. This will leave the skin surrounding the hair follicles undamaged. It also ensures that each hair is removed instead of doing a general overall sweep of the area and hoping that all the follicles have been removed.ComfortLaser hair removal systems now use advanced contact cooling technologies that will minimize discomfort while undergoing the procedure. Technicians will ensure that you are comfortable throughout the procedure and ensure that the skin surrounding the area is not overly irritated by the lasers.

With laser hair removal, the results are long term. The hair follicles are being removed and therefore should be unable to grow back. Should the hair follicles grow back, it will be a long time after the laser hair removal procedures were completed.ConfidenceA person who has undergone successful laser hair removal procedures will have more confidence. Disadvantages of Laser Hair Removal

There are also some disadvantages of black laser hair removal as followings: Dyschromia
Dyschromia is site-specific pigmentation differences. This is very prevalent in dark-skinned patients. Laser hair removal can help those with melasma and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. Patients who are prone to developing melasma are also very likely to develop post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. While laser hair removal can help these conditions, it can also irritate the skin and cause these conditions to worsen.Acne-Related ScarringIt has been found that African Americans tend to have marked inflammatory response to acne and post-inflammation hyperpigmentation with scarring is often frequent. This results in acne being one of the most common stimuli that prompt darker skinned individuals to seek laser treatments. When laser hair removal is completed, the scarring from acne will most likely be lighter pigmented and much more visible on the dark skinned individual.

Benign Cutaneous Tumors

While syringomas can be prevalent in all ethnic populations, dermatosis papulosis nigra and acne keloidal nuchae are most prevalent in African Americans. Those suffering from benign cutaneous tumors have been able to use laser treatments to smooth the skin, however, laser hair removal treatments have caused pigmentation changes that are very noticeable once the hair follicles have been completely removed.

Skin Rejuvenation

The photo-protective nature of melanin will protect darker skinned individuals from many sun-related signs of aging. Darker skinned individuals will experience crow’s feet, lipstick lines and fine perioral lines much later than lighter skinned individuals. Lasers have been used to rejuvenate the skin cells and give a more youthful look to the skin, however, the laser hair removal lasers are harsher and can cause damage to skin that is already showing signs of aging.

Laser hair removal relies heavily on melanin absorption within the bulb or hair bulge of the follicle for the follicle to be destroyed. Darker skinned individuals have a more difficult time targeting the follicles from epidermal melanin. Hair removal lasers come in several wavelengths and diode lasers that are at 800 mm and 1064 mm Nd: YAG lasers are the most effective on darker skin tones. With these, there is less melanin absorption. Many technicians are not properly trained to distinguish between which lasers and power settings are best used for each skin tone. Scarring and pigment fluctuations are more prevalent because of inappropriate laser use.

While laser hair removal is an excellent tool for those tired of shaving and waxing and is a great time saver, there are drawbacks, especially for those with darker skin tones. African Americans should research the clinic where they will be getting their laser hair removal treatments to ensure that the technicians have been properly trained. The technicians also need to be experienced in dealing with African American skin to prevent discoloration or unnecessary scarring.
